Kitchen Floor Tiling, Flat and Level
A kitchen floor takes more foot traffic than almost any other room. In an open-plan home it rarely stops at the kitchen either. It runs straight on into the dining and living areas, so the tiles need to sit flat across the whole run, with no raised edges to catch a toe or a mop.
We lay kitchen floors with a levelling system: clips that hold each tile edge flush with its neighbour while the adhesive sets, and come out once it has.
Perth's sandy ground is one reason brick and slab construction took hold here: Master Builders WA describes it as very stable, with little ground movement. A slab still gets checked for dips and cracks before tiling, and any base preparation shows on your quote. Structural cracking is assessed at the site visit. We won't tile over it. Feature Walls and Splashback Tie-Ins
A tiled feature wall sets the look of the whole kitchen. In a brick home it generally goes onto rendered masonry, which has to be sound and flat before tiling. We check it at the site visit.
The set-out decides whether the kitchen looks built in. Grout lines meet the benchtop cleanly, the cuts at each end are balanced, and the lines carry through from the wall into the tiled splashback. Planning the wall and the splashback together, before the first tile is cut, is how that happens.

Older kitchens are where that second line matters. Much of Dianella went up in the 1960s boom, so plenty of its kitchens sit on floors laid decades ago. Nobody knows what's under them until the old tiles come up.
Heritage homes have their own question. In Fremantle, the City's planning policy lists retiling, and existing kitchen fit-outs with no structural changes, among interior works exempt from planning approval for places on its Heritage List. Level 1A or 1B places and places on the State Register are excluded, so check with the City first. A building permit is a separate question.
